This study aims to explore symptoms of adolescent depression in the developmental context in order to grasp
atypical characteristics of adolescent depression. Data from Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey in 2015 was
used to examine the relationship between depression as withdrawal and aggression as acting out. A hierarchical
logistic regression was performed to explore the effects of aggression, gender, subjective satisfaction of grades,
school adjustment, somatic symptoms, and social withdrawal on depression. Controlling for the other variables in
the model, aggression significantly predicted depression, and for every one unit increase in aggression, the
likelihood of having depression increased by approximately two times. It is imperative to understand that
symptoms of adolescent depression may include aggression in addition to previously recognized internalized
symptoms of depression, which will help with appropriate intervention and prevention programs for adolescent
depression in school settings.
