오늘날 대학박물관의 교육적 기능이 사회적·개인적 욕구 등 여러 요인들에 의해 중요시 되고 있다. 대학박물관은 과거에 그 수혜자가 대학 내의 구성원들에게 국한되어 있었지만 최근에는 많은 대학박물관들이 지역민들을 위한 프로그램을 운영하여 지역구성원들의 삶의 질을 향상시키는 데 도움을 주고 있다. 대학박물관은 평생교육기관으로, 그리고 문화예술센터로 변해가고 있다. 초·중등학교의 주5일제 수업과 함께 근로자의 주5일제 근무가 실시되면서 가족이 함께 여가를 보낼 수 있는 문화교육에 대한 관점이 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 현재 대학박물관들은 각자의 특성에 맞게 전시연계, 체험연계등 다양한 교육프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 그러나 이런 사회적 요구에 비해 대학박물관들의 현실에는 여러 문제점이 존재한다. 첫째, 대학박물관들은 각자의 특성을 강화하기 위해 지역 및 박물관의 성격에 기반을 둔 교육프로그램의 개발에 힘쓸 필요가 있다. 둘째, 늘어나는 교육프로그램에 비해 대학박물관뿐 아니라 모든 박물관에서는 현재 전문인력이 많지 않다. 교육의 전문성을 위한 전문가의 양성이 요구된다. 셋째, 지역자치단체와의 협력을 통해 지역민들이 대학박물관을 좀 더 쉽게 이용할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 넷째, 교육의 안정적인 운영과 교육의 질 향상을 위한 재정지원이 필요하다. 대학박물관 교육프로그램의 수혜자 역시 지역주민들이다. 지역민을 위해서 정부나 지자체에서는 재정적인 지원을 아끼지 말아야 할 것이다.
Today educational function of college museum is receiving attention due to its various factors as social·individual desire, etc. College museum restricted beneficiary to the members within the college in the past, however recently many college museums are helping to improve quality of life of regional members by operating programs for regional residents. College museum is changing to lifelong education institute, and cultural art center. As five-day workweek for workers is implemented along with elementary·middle school’s five-day week is implemented, viewpoint on cultural education to spent leisure time together with family is steadily increasing. Presently college museums are running various educational programs, e.g. exhibition link, experience link, etc. proper for their own characteristic. However, compared to this social demand, there are several problems in the reality of college museums. First, college museums need to develop education program based on the region and the characteristic of museum in order to intensify each other’s characteristic. Second, compared to increasing educational program, all museums including college museums do not have enough special manpower. Training of experts for the professionalism of education is required. Third, through the cooperation with local community, college museums need to be used more easily. Fourth, financial support for stable operation of education and improvement of quality of education is necessary. Beneficiary of college museum education program is also regional residents. For the regional residents, the government and local government should spare no efforts to support financially.
