현재 한국의 영어교육 시장은 풍부한 교재와 넘쳐나는 콘텐츠를 무기로 하는 수많은 사교육 업체 에서 제공하는 학습 자료들로 공급과잉의 상태에 있다. 그리고 학교 현장에는 영어유치원을 비롯한 조기 영어교육의 혜택을 받고 성장한 학생들과 그에 따른 높은 기대심리와 눈높이를 가진 학부모들 이 있다. 이러한 시대적 흐름에 발맞추어 공교육에 종사하는 영어 교사는 사회적 감수성을 키우고 교 육 수요자의 수준 높은 요구에 부합할 수 있도록 학습 자료를 구비해야할 것이다. 그러나 영어교과서 는 학생들이 접하는 시점으로부터 몇 년 전에 출판된 것으로 시대적 상황보다는 일반적인 소재를 다 룰 수밖에 없고 이는 유행에 민감한 학생들의 갈증을 해소해주기 부족하다. 이에 대해 본 연구자는 영어신문을 영어교수학습 활동에 활용할 것을 제안한다. 오늘날 영어신문은 종이 신문뿐만 아니라 온 라인이나 스마트폰 앱을 통해서도 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 또한 일상생활과 밀접한 다양한 사건들을 다루 고 있기 때문에 학생들의 영어실력 뿐만이 아니라 사회적 의식을 높일 수 있는 장점이 있다. 본 연구 는 다음의 두 가지 질문에 대한 답을 찾고자 한다. 첫째, 교사들이 영어신문 활용교육을 현장에서 적 용하며 어떤 인식을 갖게 되었는가? 둘째, 읽기전략을 활용한 영어신문 활용교육이 학생들의 읽기능 력에 어떤 영향을 미치는가? 이를 위해 실험집단은 읽기전략을 활용한 신문읽기 자료가 투입된 활동 을 적용하여 수업을 진행하였고, 반면 비교집단은 전통적인 강의식 수업방법으로 교과서 지문을 활용 한 수업을 진행하였다. 또한 교사의 인식과 태도를 보기위한 설문지를 작성하여 15명의 영어교사를 대상으로 영어신문 활용교육의 교육적 효과에 관해 물어보았다. 영어신문을 활용한 영어수업을 진행 한 후 학업성취도평가의 독해문항을 이용하여 사전, 사후검사를 실시하였을 때 실험반의 학생들의 성 적이 상승했음을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 교사들의 인식에 관한 설문지 결과, 영어신문은 텍스트 기반의 자료이므로 읽기기능에 가장 적합하다고 판단하고 있으며 이를 활용한 영어과 교수학습활동이 매우 도움이 된다고 생각하는 것으로 나타났다.
English education in Korea is in a state of oversupply with learning materials provided by a number of private education companies that have abundant textbooks and overflowing content. In addition, there are students who have benefited from early English education, such as English kindergarten, and parents who have high expectation on their kids’ education. In this regard, public school teachers should have a more social awareness and attitude that can meet their demands. It is not enough to make the students feel satisfied using English textbooks alone. Because the text books had already made several years before than the time students are provided with. That’s why the researcher suggests that English newspaper should be used for English teaching and learning activities. English newspapers can be easily accessed online as well as published papers. English newspapers have many advantages when they are used as learning materials because they are easy to get through online as well as offline and deal with various events closely related to daily life. In this paper, the researcher seeks to answer the following two questions. First, what kind of perception do the teachers have as they adapt an English newspaper in the field? Second, how does English newspapers in education using reading strategies affect students' reading ability? For this purpose, the experimental group applied the reading activities using English newspaper as reading materials, while the comparative group used the textbook following a traditional teaching method. Furthermore, a questionnaire was prepared to see teachers' perceptions and attitudes and asked about the educational effects of English newspapers to 15 English teachers. The results of this study are as followed. First, the students' performance in the experimental group was increased from analysing the pre-test and post-test when the English class using an English newspaper. In addition, as a result of the questionnaire about teachers' perception, English newspapers were considered to be most suitable for reading because it is text-based learning material, and it was found that English newspapers in Education are very helpful.
