The architectural engineering major provides engineering skills and creativity required in construction
fields through engineering design classes. In order to learn those abilities, it is more appropriate for the
task of architectural engineering design to improve the deficiencies of the construction site than to bring
out innovative or completely new results. The Department of Architectural Engineering in J University has
classes to analyze safety activities in a construction field and to propose safe facilities for a safer field.
The Engineering Design for Construction Safety and Environment class analyzes unsafe factors in a
construction site, reviews literatures like patents, and suggests improved facilities and processes. The class
continues from 2009 to 2017, and has several teams with students to perform tasks to make the
construction site better to work. This paper reviews the problems in the students' activities in the
engineering class, and proposes some improvements. Construction site survey and expert interview, literature
review like patents, improvement proposal, and expert audit are necessary for task execution. This process
upgrades the student's level of participation, communication skill, and etc. The number of tasks teams
should be limited for a professor teaches effectively the teams, and the method to submit and evaluate
reports using a web board can be applied.
