Research interest in nurses’ employee benefits is increasing because of high turnover rates. The purpose
of his study was to develop and validate the Nurses’ Fringe Benefits Scale in Hospitals, using the
following steps: item generation, pilot test of the questionnaire, and tests of validity and reliability.
Forty-two preliminary items were developed through a literature review. The content validity of the items
was verified through an evaluation by nine nurses and social workers professors. Data were analyzed using
Content Validity Index (CVI) and Cronbach’s alpha. Finally, 40 items were confirmed through an item
analysis and validity tests. The items were divided into three domains, existence needs, relatedness needs,
and growth needs. The Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency of the total scale was .91, and those of the
domains were as follows: .66 for existence needs, .80 for relatedness needs, and .85 for growth needs. The
results of this study suggest that this scale is a reliable and valid primary tool to assess nurses’ fringe
benefits in hospitals.
