In this paper military strategy and tactics against French and American forces to achieve Vietnam’s independence and unification are analyzed. Vietnam, a lesser power, had to put up with combats against China, France and America as super powers respectively to preserve its sovereignty and territory. After Chinese domination for more than 1,000 years Vietnam was under France’s harsh colonial rule in the late 19th century. Defeating French force was only a half success for independence. After dispelling American military force known as the strongest super power in the world for decades from Vietnamese territory and unifying North and South, Vietnam was finally independent. In the battle against super powers strategy and tactics were a very essential part of success of the wars Vietnam carried out. Ho Chi Minh’s thought and his spirit played very important roles in the process of the military victory of wars that Vietnam had performed for more than half a century.
