시각장애 학교에서 저시력 학생 지도를 위한 교사의 역할 가운데에는 잔존시력의 활용이 교육과정의 가장 중요한 측면이며(Spungin, 1984), 이를 위해서는 먼저, 생리학적인 측면에서의 저시력 원인과 안질환 특성 및 시력과 시기능의 차이에 대한 이해가 있어야 한다. 의학적으로 두 학생의 시력이 같다 하더라도 시기능은 시력의 양, 환경 요인, 태도, 과거의 경험, 훈련, 동기 등에 따라 다를 수 있으며, 시력은 교육적인 방법에 의해서 향상시킬 수 없지만, 시기능은 향상시킬 수 있다는 점이 다르기 때문이다(임안수, 1996). 따라서 학생의 시기능 상태를 평가하여 시기능 향상 훈련과 아울러 적합한 학습매체를 학습의 장에서 효과적으로 사용할 수 있도록 지도하여야 한다. 즉, 교사는 학생이 갖고 있는 시기능의 수준에 따라 학습 프로그램의 적용을 다르게 해야 하는 것이다(Corn, 1985).
The purpose of this study is to find out eye conditions and learning environment of low vision students using print as literacy media. This study also tries to investigate what learning conditions in elementary and secondary schools for the blind throughout the country are. According to the purpose of this study 489 low vision students(40.21%) were selected from 1,216 visually impaired students at 12 schools for the blind. 409 low vision students of 489 students who used print as literacy media responded. The findings are following. First, for low vision students the appropriate literacy media was not determined by evaluation of visual functioning. Second, the appropriate learning conditions was not considered for each low vision student according to visual functioning and eye diseases. Third, teachers do not pay attention to efficient visual tasks in learning environment for low vision students. Then I\'d like to point out several suggestions as conclusion of this study. First, Teachers should gather information about low vision students and understand their pain due to their ocular diseases and they should provide with appropriate educational services. Second, teachers should find out the ways to use effective learning media for low vision students. Fourth, learning environment should be modified to maximize visual functioning for low vision students. Thus, future research should be conducted for the improvement of learning environment for low vision students.
