The purpose of this study was to explore four areas such as adequate time for beginning to learn braille, selection of instructions, appropriate time for teaching braille contractions, and selection of contents for braille learning program. For this study related literature was reviewed.
The results are as following.
First, preschool children should learn braille literacy skills early about the age of three years old. Second, teachers of students with visual impairments should provide preschoolers with experiential instruction. Third, at the beginning of braille instruction teachers of students with visual impairments should teach contracted braille letters along with Korean Alphabet. Finally, in order to develop braille learning program following contents areas should be included.
1. Touch the objects.
2. Touch lightly.
3. Discriminate the raised outlines.
4. Track the braille lines.
5. Concept development.
6. Explore braille labels on objects.
7. Touch the braille books.
8. Begin to learn braille code
9. Read braille books.
10. Write braille.
11. Develop language through the relation between braille books and the stories.
12. Drill and practice braille reading and writing everyday.
