설화의 면모는 형식, 내용, 사회, 문화 등 다양한 요소에 의하여 결정된다. 이러한 다각적인 면모는 설화를 다원적이고 다층적인 시각에서 바라보기를 요구한다. 다양한 준거에 의하여 설화를 접근하고 분석해야 하는 것도 바로 이 때문이다. 특히 설화는 서민의 생활과 맥을 같이 해온 서사문학이라는 점에서 사회적 요소와의 연관성이 높다고 본다. 어떤 시대나 사회를 지배하는 사회적 요소를 추출하는 것이 쉬운 일은 아니지만, 사상과 제도라고 생각된다. 사상이 바뀌면 제도가 바뀌고, 그에 따라 생활도 바뀌게 마련이기 때문이다. 사상.제도.생활을 종합하여 공시적, 통시적으로 바라볼 때, 설화의 변이와 그 의미가 적실하게 드러날 수 있다고 본다.

Thirdly the low type Ⅲ shows the descendant oriented cognition and confucian ancestor worship belief.
