This qualitative research project used in-depth interviews and self statements, gathered over 11 months in 2006, to examine the abuse experience of 13 Korean battered wives in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Utilizing Strauss and Corbin’s Grounded Theory method, the researcher initially derived 197 concepts, 46 subcategories, and 16 categories. As a result of the category analysis, several themes emerged, which can be summarized as “the struggle for survival in the loss of dignity.” Causal conditions included haste and feelings of being trapped. Loss of dignity was central, and contextual conditions included poverty, sexual conflict, abnormal behavior, and the absence of communication. Mediate conditions covered children’s learning, social support, and seeking alternative plans, and three consequence types were identified: surrender, empowerment, and escape. The researcher noted the necessity of social support for battered wives and of shifting from paternalism to a gender-equal society.
