<바리공주>는 제의의 맥락에서 일정한 기능을 수행하는, 살아있는 신화이다. 서울지역 <바리공주>의 서술구조는 바리공주의 행적을 중심으로 한 ‘바리서사’와 망자의 저승천도와 왕생극락 기원이란 축원형태로 발화되는 ‘망자서사’로 이루어져 있다. 바리서사는 바리공주의 상징적 죽음과 존재전환을 근간으로 하는 신화적 서사이고, 망자서사는 망자의 저승천도라는 현실적 필요성과 그로 인해 마련된 진오기굿이라는 제의적 맥락에서 작용하는 제의적 서사이다. 망자서사는 원형적 사건인 바리서사에 기반하여 전개되고 있다. 그것은 바리공주와 망자의 존재태가 ‘삶/죽음’, ‘이승/저승’의 대립항을 공유한 경계적 존재이기 때문이다. 제의가 진행됨에 따라 대립항은 통합되고, 그들은 두 영역을 넘나드는 초월적 존재로 전환하게 된다. 바리공주 서사에 망자축원이 되풀이 개입하는 이유는 이러한 두 존재의 상동성에 기인한다. 바리공주의 서사에 기대여, 망자의 극락왕생을 선언하는 일은, 바리의 서사에서 마련한 이계공간의 소통을 전례로 삼아 망자의 저승천도를 현재화하기 위한 것이다.
Princess Bari is a living myth that plays a certain function in ritual context. Princess Bari in Seoul region is consisted of two parts：One is the story of Bari which revolves around the journey of Bari and the other is Songs for the Dead that wish for the dead to move to the next world with peace and ease. The story of Bari is a mythic epic grounded in the symbolic death and transfer of being of Princess Bari. Songs for the Dead is a ritual epic that works in the ritual context created by practical reason that is the move to the next world and Ginogi Gut prepared for the occasion. Songs for the Dead is presented on the basis of the story of Bari, the original event. They share the commonality that both stories are about marginal beings with conflicting ‘life/death’, ‘this world/next world’ dyads. As ritual moves on, the dyads are integrated and they become transcendant beings who move freely between this world and next world. The reason why Songs for the dead is inserted repeatedly in the Bari story lies in the similarity of these beings. The reason why it borrows the Bari story is to realize the peaceful and easy transfer of a dead by showing an example of transfer between the two worlds found in the Bari story.
