Developing effective evaluation methods is one of the key tasks in elementary school English education. Many educators have come to recognize that performance assessment is an important means of gaining a dynamic picture of students\' linguistic development. This paper explores performance assessment techniques that can be easily incorporated into instructional activities in the English classroom. At first, performance assessment is defined and a rationale for using it over more traditional approaches is provided. Then types of assessment for elementary school English learners are introduced focusing on performance assessment, and the issue of evaluation criteria is discussed. Finally a variety of ways of assessing language skills for the 4th grade of elementary school students are suggested. This paper also makes some practical suggestions for implementing achievement test successfully in elementary school English education.
