This study is intended to identify the effects of SNS-based writing activities on the writing attitudes
and abilities of writing underachievers. To accomplish the objective, three writing underachievers who
are 3rd graders in Seoul were selected and experiments were done with AB design. Their writing
abilities were measured at each of the following stages: baseline; intervention; maintenance. When their
scores remained stable at the baseline stage, intervention began. During the 6-week intervention,
SNS-based writing activities were conducted. Throughout the intervention, their writing abilities were
measured. To identify whether the effects of intervention continued, a maintenance test was conducted
one week after the intervention was over. Their writing attitudes were measured through the test
papers used before and after the intervention and changes were compared. The findings are as follows.
First, the SNS-based writing activities enhanced the writing abilities of writing underachievers; the
effects continued even after the intervention was over. Second, the SNS-based writing activities
enhanced the writing attitudes of writing underachievers. The significance of this study is as follows: It
has demonstrated that SNS-based writing activities enhance the writing abilities and attitudes of writing
underachievers. The study has also proved that the improved writing abilities were maintained even
after the activities were over. The future studies need to find the methods of applying the SNS-based
writing activities to long compositions of upper grades. Also, whether or not the activities can enhance
the writing abilities and attitudes of upper grades should be explored. In addition, the effects of
applying the activities for a long time should be examined.
