I have investigated preschoolers\' preferences, selection rationales, and processes when choosing a favorite picturebook. One-hundred-thirteen preschoolers were invited to select their favorite book from among eight high-quality picturebooks representing a variety of genres. In addition, children were interview(e)d about their selections. The results of this study are as follows. First, children preferred a realistic picturebook. One-third of children selected a realistic picturebook as their favorite one. Second, the selection rationales of these children focused on the illustrations of the picturebook. Third, many children looked through only the pictures in the picturebook to make their selection.
