This study is intended to analyze picture book effect on a young children by way of meta analysis
and, by extension, to give sophisticated educative suggestions for language education program. First,
we performed Test of Homogeneity for 54 domestic researches done between 1998 and 2012, then
introduced Random Effect Model, to reveal the result of each of the effect sizes. Eventually, overall
effect size of language activities through picture book on a young children is 1.14, proven to be at
the large level in light of Cohen's Interpretation Standard for effect size. After analyzing gaps of
effect sizes with different categorical moderator variables, the study also presents that a significant
difference appears depending on activity types, language ability types, and age. Lastly, we tried to
find out which kind of relationships are formed between effect size and continuous moderator
variables such as treatment period and year of publication. To sum it up, activities with language
through picture book on a young children have a positive influence on young children, but the
influence can be divergent depending on features of various independent, dependent, and moderator
variables. Therefore, it can be seen as a conclusion in this study that in a young children education
field, efforts should be made to develop young children programs and activities with picture book
properly attuned to the features of the above-mentioned variables, and furthermore to support it,
educational policies should be required on a national level.
