The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge of elementary
school students about the term of climate change. Participants were 538 students (5th and 6th grade)
of elementary school in a big city. This Study employed a self-developed questionnaire. We
examined the students’ familiarity of the terms related to climate change. Findings are as follows:
The majority of elementary school students (92.9%) responded that they heard the terms of climate
change before, and their main sources were mass media such as TV or radio (28.1%). Also,
other sources were the subject of science (41.0%) and social studies (20.2%) that taught about
climate change at schools. Elementary students’ level of knowledge about the terms of climate
change scored 86.6 out of 100 points on the survey. 6th grade students scored higher than 5th
grade students on the sub-domains of the causes, the impact, and the corresponding role of climate
change significantly(p<.01). Lastly, regarding the method of mitigation and the corresponding role
of climate change on the sub-domains, there was statistically significant difference between boys
and girls (p<.05).
