국문초록

복제 기술의 눈부신 발달로 마침내 1997년 복제양 돌리가 탄생했다. 이후 생명체 복제기술은 인류의 미래에 새로운 희망이 될 수 있으리라는 전망 하에 계 속적으로 발전을 거듭하고 있다. 이처럼 기술 발전이 이루어졌음에도 동물 복제를 어떻게 보아야 할 것인지에 대한 윤리적 접근을 해 보려는 시도는 국내에서는 상 대적으로 미진한 편이다. 이에 필자는 동물 권리론을 이용해 동물 복제 논의를 검 토해 보고자 한다. 리건(Tom Regan)의 동물 권리론에 따르면 동물들은 삶의 주체 (subjects-of-a-life)가 될 수 있는 존재로, 다른 존재들에 대한 유용성 등과 무관하 게 그 존재에 고유한 가치(inherent value)를 갖는다. 이와 같은 입장을 취할 경우 복제는 거의 대부분의 경우에 허용할 수 없게 된다. 한편 이러한 입장과 다소 다르 게 권리를 고통을 당하지 않을 권리로 해석해 볼 수 있는데. 이와 같이 해석할 경 우 복제 허용의 여지는 상대적으로 커질 수 있다. 이 글에서 필자는 이러한 동물 권리론자들이 동물 복제 옹호 논변들을 어떻게 판단할 것인지를 검토해 보고 있다. 이러한 검토를 통해 필자는 인간에게 도움이 되기 때문에 복제가 이루어져야 한다 는 이기적인 생각을 넘어서 훨씬 신중하게 동물 복제를 생각해 볼 수 있게 되리라 생각한다.

영문초록

Finally, in 1997, Dolly the cloned sheep was born due to the remarkable development of cloning technology. Since then, organism cloning has been developing continuously under the prospect that it could be the new hope of future's mankind. Meanwhile, domestic moral approach to animal cloning does not seem to match the technological improvements. Therefore, I would like to examine the issue with some reference to T. Regan’s well-known theory of animal rights. According to Regan, animals are beings that can be “subjects-of-a-life,” which has its own inherent value regardless of the utility of others. On the other hand, right can be interpreted as not being harmed by others. This interpretation might permit animal cloning in more circumstances. I am in the process of studying how supporters of animal rights are planning to make their stand in the debate concerning animal cloning. As a result of this study, I hope to bring about opportunities to consider animal cloning more carefully, rather than the selfish support which solely stems from the potential benefits to mankind.
