The purpose of this study is to explore Korean social studies teachers' perception of multicultural education and its implications on social studies teacher education programs. The sample for this study consists of 258 social studies teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The questionnaire is comprised of questions regarding multicultural attitude, multicultural misconceptions, purpose of multicultural education, and teachers' suggestions for better implementation of multicultural education. The results of this study are as follows. First, social studies teachers have the 'caring-centered' perspective most strongly. However, old generation teachers are more likely to have the 'assimilation perspective.' Second, most social studies teachers feel that they are not sufficiently prepared for multicultural education. Third, they want to receive more professional development programs for multicultural education and they feel the need to change teacher education programs in schools of education. Teacher education programs in college should offer more courses on cultural diversity and culturally relevant teaching. Also, more professional development programs for K-12 inservice teachers on multicultural education should be provided.
