The purpose of this study is to analyze the structure of teacher education in terms of teacher education paradigm and the history of secondary teacher education. Orientation to teacher education means ideas that serve as guidelines in teacher education; that is, a belief system focusing on the purpose of teacher education, the formation and maintenance of teacher education programs and the roles of teachers and prospective teachers. Each teacher education institution possesses its own history and characteristics unique on to itself. Each institution has its own orientation to teacher education which manifests itself in its curriculum, faculty and students. This study examines and analyzes the history and characteristics of the College of Education, Seoul National University, which is significant in its position as the first secondary teacher education institute in Korea. Previous studies on the orientation of teacher education focused more on theory than practice. This practical study attempts to identify the characteristics of the orientation and its structure of teacher education. It can be concluded that the system or structure of teacher education will be decided according to the history of teacher education institute, the quality of would-be teachers, and the academic goal of the universities which college of education located.
