Thepurposeofthisstudy isto exploretheway to enhancethepatriotism of
thegeneralpublic,focusing thecoordination ofthespiritofnationalsecurity from
therepublicpatriotism perspectives,nationalpride,and socialcapitals.Thisstudy
examine the relations ofthese three factors in the Korean context,employing
survey data setsproduced by the Ministry ofPatriotsand Veterans Affairsand
EastAsiaInstitute.Theanalysisleadsto acoupleoffindings:First,unbalanced
relationshipamongthespiritofnationalsecurity,nationalpride,andsocialcapitals
are apparent.Blind patriotism failed to build a productive relations with the
constructive patriotism based on civic identity.Second,three main factors -
traditionalself-perception asKorean nation,democracy,and materialism - find to
have stronger impact on the development of patriotism in Korea.Traditional
self-perception based on blood constitutes a basis ofmodernized and politicized
state identity of the Republic of Korea. Democratization process has also
contributed to the constructive coordination of blind patriotism based on
ethno-nationalidentity and constructive patriotism ofcivic identities.Materialism
constitutesapreferenceprism forcontendingsocialissuesanddistortssocialtrust
andparticipation,encroaching socialcapitals.Thirdly,thediscussionsuggestsfour
waystomakeastrongerpatriotism.Firstofall,republicanpatriotism isneededto
be indoctrinated,paving a path to strengthening its influence on politicaland
ethicaljudgment.Thespiritofpatriotism shouldconstituteabasisarationalnorm
ofjustice,institutionalizing patriotism as a supererogatory action.Atthe same
time,a dynamic construction ofthe collective memory ofa democratic republic
should beactivated by triggering historicaland culturalpride,employing various
mediathatembodiescollectivememories.Finally,avirtuouscircleofsocialcapital
should be established by expanding the norm of Norm of reciprocity and
participationnetwork.
