?성학십도(聖學十圖)?, ?천명도설(天命圖說)?, ?주자서절요?, ?자성록 (自省錄)?은 퇴계 이황의 저술 가운데 4대 저술로 꼽힌다. 퇴계는 주자 (朱子) 저술의 중요성을 부각시키고, 주자 저술 가운데 서간(書簡) 부분 을 따로 뽑아 20권으로 엮고 주해와 고증을 가하였다. 이것은 조선의 주 자학 연구사에서 선구적인 일이었다. 퇴계의 ?주자서절요? 편찬은 자신 의 인격 완성에 목적이 있다. 퇴계는 주자를 통해 자신이 나가야 될 참 된 길을 찾으려 했다. 또 자신이 편찬한 책을 통해 다른 사람과도 그런 인식을 공유하려 했다. 교육적 목적이 가장 컸다. 이 글에서는 ?주자서절요? 서문에 대한 분석을 중심으로, 퇴계가 이 책을 편찬한 목적과 교 육적 의미에 대해 고찰하였다. 그동안 ?주자서절요?는 제대로 평가 받지 못하였다. ‘개성 없는 편집 서’라는 선입견이 작용한 결과일 것이다. 필자는 이 ?절요?야말로 퇴계 학의 본령이 어떤 것인지를 분명하게 보여준 것이라고 평가한다. 학문과 실천이 별개의 것이 되고 교육이 인격 형성과 사회 발전에 도움을 주지 못하는 오늘의 현실을 되돌아봄에 있어, ?주자서절요?는 우리에게 바람 직한 교육의 방향성을 제시하는 바 크다고 본다.
?Sunghakshipdo (聖學十圖): Ten Showings of Completing Study?, ?Chunmyungdosul (天命圖說): Revealing the Destiny from Heaven?, ?Joojaseojulyo: Compilation of Chu-tzu’s Works, ?Jasunglock (自省 錄): Self-reflection? are main four works of Toegye Yi Hwang. He emphasized importance of describing Chu-tzu’(朱子)s works, and picked important correspondences from Chu-tzu’s works to compiled them into 20 books with interpretation and historical investigation. Yi’s accomplishment was significant in studying Chu-tzu in Chosun dynasty. Yi’s published ?Joojaseojulyo? to complete his character. He tried to find the right way through studying Chu-tzu, and sought to share his vision with the others by studying his own books together. ?Joojaseojulyo? was published mainly for education purposes. I analyzed purpose of publishing ? Joojaseojulyo? and its educational implications focusing on prologue of ?Joojaseojulyo?. ?Joojaseojulyo? has been underestimated, perhaps because of stereotype that it was a ‘Compilation without unique value’. I believe that this ?Compilation? is an essence of Yi’s studies. As in the modern society, studies and actions are separated, and education cannot influence character building and social development, ?Joojaseojulyo? shows us the right direction of education.
