The purpose of this study was to examine in what situations conflicts happened among
students in elementary physical education setting and how they got rid of conflicts.
The subjects in this study were 44 students who were enrolled in fifth -grade class 5 at
Daehan Elementary School ( an assumed name) under the Gangseo Office of Education in Seoul,
where this researcher has worked. Among them , 22 each were boys and girls, and their
Physical education classes conducted in the playground were videotaped by this researcher for
16 weeks, from April 21 to July 5 and from September 1 to October 4, 2003, twice a week.
Partivipant observation and in-depth interview were fulfilled to gather data. The collected data
were transcribed and encoded, and then domain analysis and classification analysis were made.
The brief finkings of the study were as follows:
First, the students suffered conflicts when they tried to own game tools, made up teams ,
divided roles, applied rules, were involved in games in an insinere amnner or disturbed games
and when games weren\'t appropriate. Most conflicts occurred when they organized teams of
applied rules. Specifically, the boys intended to play games with those whose motor skills were
equivalent to theirs in order to win games when teams were made up, and personal ties were
important for the girls as they tried to play games with their close friends.
Second, the strategies they employed to eliminate conflicts were attacking, threatening, neglecting, complying, compromising,
and verbal attack was comprised by shouting and using a foul language. In the event of threatening, there were physical and verbal
threat as well.
The most frequently utilized solution was physical attack and threatening. The girls put
verbal attack to more use than physical attack . In particular, those who were weak relied on compliance strategy, requested their peers to mediate, or asked thier teacher for help .
On the other hand, compromising which was one of ideal and positive solutions to present one\'s own
opinions, repect others and make a concession, was alsoone of major solutions they used
