This study aims to develop an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) program
using case methods for early childhood pre-service teachers. The process involved in
attaining the objectives of this study is as follows. First, a review on the literature on
teacher educational programs for ESD was conducted and the needs of teacher educational
programs for ESD were analyzed. Second, the ESD program for early childhood pre-service
teachers was developed after the selection of objectives, contents, cases, and teaching
methods. The case methods that were used to develop the ESD program involved program
contents. Cases implemented in early childhood educational institutes were selected to
provide early childhood pre-service teachers with the opportunity to understand ESD and to
explore the possibility of applying ESD in practice. Third, the ESD program was carried out
for early childhood pre-service teachers and the program was modified based on the
evaluation results for efficient implementation in pre-service teacher education.
The early childhood pre-service teachers formed positive awareness on ESD and
recognized the importance of ESD in early childhood education, thus becoming supporters of
the application of ESD in early childhood education. In addition, they realized the
importance of forming proper values, attitudes, competencies, and attributes for the
implementation of ESD in early childhood education.
