교육이란 무엇인가? 교육의 개념을 묻는 이 질문에 대한 대답을 직접적으로 밝히고자 시도한 대표적인 교육학자로 이홍우와 장상호를 들 수 있다. 이홍우는 『교육의 개념』 에서 교육 의 세 가지 개념을 제시하며 교육이란 무엇인지 설명한다. 그리고 장상호는 『학문과 교육』 에 서 학문과는 구분되는 교육이란 무엇인지 설명한다. 그런데 이들 두 학자가 동일한 질문에 대 해 내놓은 답은 매우 다르다. 장상호의 주장에 따르면 이홍우는 학문을 통해 교육을 설명하는 환원주의에 빠져있다. 그리하여 장상호는 교육의 내재율을 통해 학문과 구분되는 교육을 설명 한다. 그러나 이홍우의 입장에서 보면 교육의 내재율은 별도로 존재하는 것이 아니다. 그의 주 장에 따르면, 심성을 함양하도록 이끄는 논의는 언제나 교육학적으로 해석될 여지가 있으며, 결국 그것은 교육학과 다르지 않은 것이다. 이러한 두 학자의 서로 다른 주장은 뒤르껭과 듀이를 해석하는 관점에서도 동일한 차이를 보인다. 이 논문에서는 이홍우와 장상호의 교육의 개념을 비교하기 위해 그들이 뒤르껭과 듀이를 수용하고 배척하는 논리를 알아보고자 한다.
What is education? Lee Hong-Woo and Chang Sang-Ho are typical researchers on educational concept. Lee suggests three concepts of education in his Concepts of Education and explains what is education in it. Chang explains that the education is different from the academic discipline in his Academic Discipline and Education. However, they propose different answers respectively for the same question. According to Chang, Lee has the reductionist disadvantage, which explains education through science. On the other hand, Chang explains education through the intrinsic rules of education. But from the Lee`s view, the intrinsic rules of education can`t separate from the science. An argument that makes someone`s mind like plato`s Idea can always interpret educational argument and it is exactly alike pedagogy. This difference of opinion Lee between Chang shows same difference interpretation of Durkheim and Dewey. So we try to examine Lee and Chang`s answer through their difference interpretation of Durkheim and Dewey.
