The purpose of this study was to examine what needs teachers who were going to retire had for career-development programs as a way to provide for their old age, make a new contribution to society and capitalize on their own plenty of experiences, knowledge and knowhow. And it's also meant to discuss the necessity of their post-retirement social participation and how to make it happen.
The findings of the study were as follows:
As for personal characteristics, many of the retirees-to-be were in good shape and in good financial circumstances. Most of them were religious, and many lived with their spouses only. Concerning the use of career-development programs, the majority received education about career development or were receiving it, and they were highly satisfied with it. The teachers who didn't take part in career-development programs were divided into two groups according to the reason for that. One didn't felt the need for that, which could be defined as a personal reason, and the other didn't take that education because education institutes weren't easily accessible or because there weren't enough programs or information on the programs, which could be called problems with educational institutes or programs. Although they viewed social participation favorably and expressed satisfaction at it, they weren't involved in social activities often, and the types of social activities in which they took part weren't diverse.
