One of the main trends of global music education is the emphasis of 'creativity,' as in other subject areas. Traditionally, the mastery of skills or playing of the presented musical pieces has been a main learning activity in instrumental music classes of schools. This study has been conducted to examine the possibility of conceptualizing an instructional process for encouraging and possibly developing creative musical thought in the instrumental music class. The researcher has investigated four areas of theories which were regarded having the high relevancy for the theme of this study: (1) theories on general creativity; (2) theories on musical creativity; (3) theories on music teaching and learning; and (4) theories on Information and Communication Technology OCT). As a result, the following conclusions have been drawn: (1) instrumental learning should be focused on the development of aural thinking which uses the instrument as a medium; (2) creative instrumental musical thought proceeds through the phases of the construction of aural-images - deconstruction of aural images-reconstruction of aural images, Six sub phases of creative instrumental musical thinking were also conceptualized: (1) selection of instrumental medium; (2) selection of domain; (3) control; (4) imaginative play; (5) reconstruction; and (6) emergence. The researcher expects that the result of this study would spur further interests in the studies of instrumental music education, and also hopes that this conceptual model would be validated by successive empirical studies.
