Most of music colleges mid universities in Korea require non-piano major music students to take piano lessons under the title of 'piano for non-piano majors', 'the secondary piano' or 'class piano'. In operating these classes, many gaps and disagreements are found in their teaching style, materials, method, content and assessment. Furthermore students and teachers don`t realize the importance of these classes. The purpose of this research is to examine how these classes are operated in 51 music colleges and universities in Korea and to find suggestions for college non-piano major music students to have better piano learning. According to the result of the survey, there have been gathered several information and suggestions to operate the secondary piano or the class piano more effectively. Firstly, it is strongly suggested to increase amount of lesson time. Secondly, it is necessary to develop a piano method or teaching materials for the college non-piano major college music majors. And thirdly, students are required to change their attitude and value toward the secondary piano class. Despite the short history of piano instruction in Korea and inadequate materials, Korea has produced a number of world-class pianists and musicians who have played important roles in performance and education. Korean piano instruction has been developed enormously in a short period. However, Korean piano instruction was a product of elite-oriented focusing only for advanced pianists, not for general music students. Now it is the time to realized the seriousness of the situation and need to diverse teaching philosophies and strategies. In addition, individual instructors for class piano or required-piano need to develop proper teaching materials and strategies to cope with the current circumstances.
