The purpose of the college education is traditionally considered as the
search for truth. As employment becomes a important issues of the day,
however, music education at collegiate school cannot help adopting to
meet the demands of reality, finding a job.
Profession in music performance are highly competitive and specialized.
Solo careers are extremely rare, while careers in chamber music and
orchestra playing are more attainable. But, music academia does not
necessarily provide supportive and specialized training which are
vocationally required for its future graduates.
The purpose of this study is to examine the nature of collegiate
·schools of music and performance career specialities of solo, chamber and orchestra in terms of career steps, requirement, and work environments.
Then, new educational strategies for the profession would be proposed,
which incorporates vocational education and counseling, a career decision after two years and specialized training for the remainder.
It is hoped that this result could promote active discussion about the
programs of collegiate schools of music in order to satisfy two goals of
all-round education and employment.
