본 연구는 수잔 랭어의 음악 미학의 핵심 개념인 ‘느낌’의 학문적 배경을 파헤쳐 그 의미를 상세하게 고찰함으로써, 느낌과 음악의 관계에 대한 랭어의 견해를 심도 있게 이해하는 것을 목적으로 삼았다. 랭어는 다학문적 연구를 통해 자신의 ‘느낌’ 개념을 재구성하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 인간 ‘느낌’의 역동적인 형태와 능동적인 사고로서의 역할을 설파(說破)하였다. 랭어 예술철학의 주춧돌인 이러한 ‘느낌’ 개념은 먼저 음악에 적용되었다. 상징주의 철학을 바탕으로 랭어는 음악이 “느낌의 형태”를 그 의미로 내포하고 있으며, 음악상징의 구성과 인식에 직관과 통찰이 중심적 역할을 한다는 것을 밝혀내었다. 음악이 단순한 감각적 자극에 머물지 않고, 직관과 통찰을 통한 정신적이고 사변적인 경험이라는 점을 강조한 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to look at the academic background and the implied meaning of S. K. Langer``s ‘feeling’ in order to understand the relationship between feeling and music in her music aesthetics. Langer``s reconstruction of the traditional concept of ‘feeling’ had been based on the fruits of various academic disciplines. Along with the dynamic gestalt appears in a complex process of ‘feeling’, Langer emphasized the evolution of human ‘feeling’ into the active, interpretative thoughts. She applied the concept of such ‘feeling’ to music. As a result, Langer succeeded to confirm that the music reflects ‘the morphology of feeling.’ She also successfully argued that the insight is a central way of cognition for music. Regarding music as a symbol revealing the life of human ‘feeling’, Langer emphasizes the value of music not just as an affective stimulation but a provider for mental and speculative experience.
