This study aims at helping students learn applicable and lively mathematics and build positive mathematical learning attitudes by actively utilizing mathematical materials around us in the teaching of mathematics. To do this, we first examined the mathematical meanings of several common materials and the possibility of using them in the operation of the curriculum. Then, one of the materials (i.e., a bundle of pipes) was adopted into a class. The class was found to stimulated students' curiosity and motivation for learning, foster various reactions, communication, and mathematical thinking in the classroom, and draw appropriate learning attitudes from the students. This effect calls upon the development and use of these out-of-class materials as well as further research on other effective approaches.
