Purpose: This study was designed to find out the nature of nursing student s experience of overseas volunteer in order to understand their experience of participating in overseas volunteer. Based on this, this study aims to contribute to the development of the efficient management scheme of nursing student s volunteer and the volunteer programs and to provide the data for establishing the nursing intervention. Methods: The participants in the study were 8 people comprised of 3 male students and 5 female students who are the students of Nursing Department of J University located in Gyeongsangnam-do and participated in overseas volunteer work. Data were collected through in-depth interviews for three months from July to September, 2017, and analyzed by the phenomenological method proposed by Giorgi(2004). Results: The 39 subcategories for the nursing student s experience of participating in overseas volunteer and 7 categories of learning nursing study well, identifying good medical environment in Korea, feeling pride as a nursing student, having the opportunity to apply nursing knowledge and nursing skills, resolving to the continuity of the volunteering work, self-esteem being promoted, having affection to school were derived, and the core meaning structure in common was establishing identity as a nursing student. Conclusion: This study will provide a new insight on volunteer work in nursing college based on the overall understanding of the nursing student s experience of participating in overseas volunteer, and contribute to induce the nursing intervention based on the nursing student s experience of volunteer.
