This study examined how the vicarious contact of older adults via social media affects discriminatory attitudes toward older adults. In particular, perceived elderly stigma was examined as a mediator between the vicarious contact of older adults via social media and discriminatory attitudes toward older adults. Based on an online survey of adults aged 18 to 64, the full mediation effect of the perceived elderly stigma was verified. That is, negative vicarious contact increased perceived elderly stigma which, in turn, elevated discriminatory attitudes toward older adults. Results are in line with previous studies which verified the impact of traditional media contents on formation of elderly stigma and discrimination toward the elderly, and suggest that communication strategies to reduce elderly stigma is also needed on social media.
