In < Taxi Driver >, the main outsider is the ordinary citizen outside of Gwangju, represented by the foreign reporter Jürgen Hinzpeter and the taxi driver Kim Sangbok, and the outsider’s eye is their viewpoint. This eye shifts from the gaze which separates the subject from the object to the new eye from which outsider shares insider’s eye on the foundation of the social being, i.e. ordinary citizen as the subjugated class. On the other hand, The eye of Kim as a korean worker changed into the eye of integration, while the eye of Hinzpeter as a foreign reporter changed into the eye of solidarity. It has the effect of the accepting both the attitudes, i.e. integration and solidarity. The outsider’s eye in the film and the audience’s one outsie of screen are in a similar vein. By choosing this outsider’s eye, especially the two outsider’s eyes, the could draw the sympathy of the complicated audience, for it could relieve them of a pressure on the heartbreaking historical fact that has not yet been cleaned.
