<택시 운전사>에서 주요 외부자는 독일 기자 위르겐 힌츠페터와 택시 기사 김만섭으로 대표되는 비광주 지역 서민이며, 외부자 시선은 타 지역 서민인 비광주 지역 피지배층의 시선이다. 이 시선은 피지배층인 서민이라는 사회적 존재를 토대로 주체와 객체를 분리하는 응시를 벗어나 내부자와 공감하게 되는 새로운 외부자 시선으로 전환한다. 그러나 한국인 노동자인 김만섭은 국내 외부자인 반면, 외국인 기자인 힌츠페터는 국외 외부자로서 중첩된 성격을 갖는다. 그에 따라 김만섭의 시선은 광주시민과 동일화 과정을 밟는 통합의 시선으로 변한 반면, 힌츠페터는 외부의 지원을 도모하는 연대의 시선으로 변한다. 이러한 장치는 통합과 연대라는 두 가지 태도를 모두 수용하는 효과를 갖는다. 스크린 안의 외부자 시선은 스크린 밖의 시선, 곧 관객의 시선을 가정한다. <택시 운전사>는 외부자 시선을 선택함으로써 청산되지 못한 가슴 아픈 역사적 사실을 다루면서도 관객의 부담을 덜어주고 두가지 시선을 함께 선택함으로써 다소 거리를 둔 관객의 공감까지 끌어낼 수 있었다.
In < Taxi Driver >, the main outsider is the ordinary citizen outside of Gwangju, represented by the foreign reporter Jürgen Hinzpeter and the taxi driver Kim Sangbok, and the outsider’s eye is their viewpoint. This eye shifts from the gaze which separates the subject from the object to the new eye from which outsider shares insider’s eye on the foundation of the social being, i.e. ordinary citizen as the subjugated class. On the other hand, The eye of Kim as a korean worker changed into the eye of integration, while the eye of Hinzpeter as a foreign reporter changed into the eye of solidarity. It has the effect of the accepting both the attitudes, i.e. integration and solidarity. The outsider’s eye in the film and the audience’s one outsie of screen are in a similar vein.
