이 연구에서는 1974년 정신박약아 초등부 교육과정부터 2015년 특수교육 교육과정까지 특수교육 교육과정 사회과의 내용을 구성방식과 핵심요소에 따라 분석하였다. 구성방식에서는 특수교육 교육과정 사회과의 변화과정을 교육과정 체계의 변화 관점에서 분석하였고, 핵심요소에서는 교육과정의 일관성과 사회의 발전에 따른 교육내용 변화를 분석하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 특수교육 교육과정 사회과는 구성방식 측면에서 교육과정 체계가 점차 일관성을 찾아가는 방향으로 개정되었다. 핵심요소의 변화 측면은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 특수교육 교육과정 사회과는 학습내용의 범위 및 수준에 있어 일관성이 부족하였다. 둘째, 특수교육 교육과정 사회과는 사회의 변화를 반영하여 개정되었다. 셋째, 특수교육 교육과정 사회과에는 특수교육대상자의 자립생활과 관련된 내용이 지속적으로 등장하였는데, 이는 전통적인 사회과의 내용과는 구분되는 특징이다. 위의 결과를 바탕으로 향후 개정될 특수교육 교육과정 사회과의 개정 방향에 대한 제언을 논의하였다.
This study aims to investigate how the format of the basic curriculum of social studies has changed for 40 years, from 1974 establishment to 2015 revision, and to determine the change process by extracting the main elements. To analysis the change of social studies in the basic curriculum, we analysed the curriculum documents from 1974 elementary school curriculum for the mentally retarded to 2015 revised special education curriculum. In terms of format, social studies in the basic curriculum has been revised in the way of seeking systemicity and consistency. The process of change in main elements is as follows. First, the basic curriculum of social studies is inconsistent in terms of the scope and the level of contents. Second, the basic curriculum of social studies is reflecting social changes. Third, the basic curriculum of social studies has consistently contained the contents about independent living of the students with disabilities. This is a distinctiveness of the basic curriculum of social studies.
