하린과 박종홍은 동시대를 살았던 사람이다. 국가와 민족의 위기 상황을 해결하기 위하여 서양철학의 연구로부터 유익한 경험과 교훈을 얻고자 시도하였다. 그들은 서양문화의 충격에 직면하여 서양문화를 흡수함으로써 전통문화를 재해석하여야 함을 강하게 주장하였다. 또한 동서양의 사상문화에 대한 융합을 자신의 사명으로 받아들이고 융합에 이르기 위한 세 가지 절차——전통문화에 대한 전승, 서양문화에 대한 흡수, 동서양 문화에 대한 융합을 통하여 궁극적으로 사상의 발전과 창조를 이루어내고자 하였던 학문적 시도는 거의 비슷하다. 하지만 현대 신유학의 발전을 놓고 보면, 형성과 발전의 단계를 거쳐 하린의 동서양 문화 및 철학에 대한 관점은 비교적 객관적이고 이성적인 반면에 박종홍은 서양철학 제1세대로서 동서양 문화의 장, 단점과 우열 비교에 주목하고 있다.
He Lin and Park Jonghong, who were at the same era, tried to get useful lessons from the study of Western philosophy to solve the crisis faced by the country and the nation. With the introduction of Western culture, they advocated to reinterpret the traditional culture by absorbing Western culture. Besides, as they regarded integrating the Eastern and Western ideologies and cultures as their mission, they tried to realize the development and creation of ideas and came up with the similar three steps to achieve this goal, which were the inheritance of traditional culture, the absorption of Western culture and the integration of Eastern and Western cultures. However, as far as the development of modern neo-Confucianism was concerned, He Lin`s views of East and West Cultures and their philosophies were more objective and rational since the formation and development of the first stage. And Park Jonghong, the first generation of Western philosophy researchers in South Korea, mainly focused on Comparing similarities and weaknesses between Eastern and Western cultures.
