The Essays of Three-family Village is a special contribution column which had been opened by editorial department of the Beijing Municipal Committee s publication, Frontline in September 1961. Deng Tuo, Wu Han, and Liao Mo-sha published about 65 pieces for about 3 years until July 1964 in this contribution. These consisted of presenting a desirable life view, introducing academic inquiry methods, and criticizing the undesirable phenomenon that existed in real politics and society at the time. The essays of Lu Xun criticized the current problems directly and acutely. Zeng Yan-xiu, Xu Mao-yong, and Ba Ren inherited this spirit of Lu Xun. On the contrary, the criticism of Three-family Village was a way of comparing real problems to events or characters of ancient history. It was a very metaphorical and gentle way. However, they praised the Chinese Communist Party and Mao Ze-dong throughout their sentences while they were criticizing reality. They needed a safeguard against repression, as the Chinese Communist Party used the deceptive tactics of Anti-Rightist Campaign shortly after it declared the two hundred policies in 1956. However, the oppression against The Essays of Three-family Village, a modern version of literary inquisition, led by Yao Wen-yan led to the death of Deng Tuo and Wu Han and the long suffering of Liao Mo-sha. At that time, there was no freedom of criticism and satire in China, and there was a coercive social atmosphere dominated by the Chinese Communist Party.
