Global citizenship education, which aims at fostering the sensitivity and competency of global citizens, has become a pressing agenda at the international level. Recent studies urge that we need to understand why global citizenship education is acknowledged as the significant changing factor in the world and to figure out how global citizenship education could be applied to Korea schools at theoretical and practical levels. Thus, global citizenship education should go beyond cross-curricula activities. Based on UNESCO and Oxfam s conceptual framework of global citizenship education, we intend to elucidate the key elements of global citizen education that should be emphasized and highlighted in art education for the first grade of elementary school. In this vein, this study purports to investigate the concepts and meanings of global citizenship education that can be applied to the theory and practice of art education. In addition, the conceptual framework of the integration of global citizenship education in art education is developed in association with the concepts of cultural sensitivity, diversity and empathy. The significance of this study can be found in that the intertwined relationship between global citizenship education and multicultural art education is examined in an attempt to generate the theoretical foundation of global citizenship education through art.
