이 연구는 정신지체 중등학생 511명의 적응행동 기술 중 사회적 기술을 분석한 것이다. 검사도구는 파라다이스 한국표준 적응행동검사를 사용하였다. 연구의 결과에 의하면 특수학교에 재학하고 있는 정신지체 중등학생의 사회적 기술 평균은 24점 만점에 6.51점이었다. 이러한 연구결과는 정신지체 중등학생은 만18세가 되어도 만6세의 비장애학생이 수행하는 사회적 기술의 수행능력을 보인다는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 이러한 결과가 정신지체 학생에 대한 특수교육의 내용과 방법의 문제인지 혹은 정신지체인의 인지발달과 사회성 발달의 특징인지에 대한 연구가 진행되어야 할 것이다. 정신지체 중등학생의 사회적 기술은 14세 이후에 점진적으로 발전하여 18세에는 13세의 2배에 달하는 결과를 나타내었다. 이는 정신지체 학생에 대하여 평생교육의 차원에서 계속적인 지원이 필요하다는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 연구의 대상이 된 정신지체 학생들은 자신의 감정을 표현하거나 이메일 및 전화를 사용하여 필요한 의견을 전달하는 능력이 매우 열악하였다. 따라서 이들에 대한 사회적 기술의 향상을 위해서는 교과위주의 수업뿐만 아니라 적응행동을 향상시킬 수 있는 보다 구체화된 개별화 교육이 진행되어야 한다.
The purpose of this study was to find out development of social skills of 511 students with mental retardation who were in secondary special schools. The test tool was Paradise Korea Standard Adaptive Behavior Scale. The results indicated that children with mental retardation in the secondary special schools acquired mean of 6.51 out of 24 in the 12 social skill questionnaires. This result means that even though the students with mental retardation who were in secondary special schools are 13-18 chronological years old, their social skill ages are under 6 years old. However their social skills have developed slowly and steadily at the age of 14. Their social skills are very weak in the items of their feeling expression, using email and telephones. These results showed that students with mental retardation in the secondary special schools need more social relationship experiences in their school, home and their local communities with others for their independent vocational life.
