This study explores a possibility of using the theory of 敬(Gyeong), established by 退溪(Toegye), as a theory of
consultation suitable for the Korean culture and sentiments. To that end, the theory of 敬(Gyeong) and psychoanalytic
therapy are analyzed and compared in order to examine 1) the viewpoints of a human, 2) the structure and function
of the mind, and 3) the processes of resolving psychological problems. As a result, the two theories have a lot in common
as well as differences. Yet, the following suggests that the 敬(Gyeong) theory can be used for consultation theories.
First, as regards the viewpoints of a human, both theories focus on realization of a personality (establishment of identity)
and view that the inner person, rather than environments, weighs more strongly with ideas and behaviors of a human.
Second, with respect to the structure and function of the mind, of 心(Shim), 性(Seong), and 情(Jeong) (of the 敬
(Gyeong) theory) as well as 'super ego', 'ego', and 'id' (of the theory of psychoanalytic therapy), the function of 心(Shim)
corresponds to that of 'ego' and 性(Seong) to 'super ego'. Third, with regard to the processes of resolving psychological
problems, the process of 'studying - refining the mind - realizing morality - learning' is very similar to the process
of 'understanding core emotions - interpreting /sympathizing - discerning - learning'. In addition, both theories agree
that introspection should be done basically at every phase, intellectual and emotional approaches should be done together,
and that training or therapy of realizing a personality cannot be done at a time but should occur gradually, over time.
This study, therefore, suggests the following based on the research results and significance. First, follow-up research
shall focus on concrete and practical methods of consultation methods or skills using the 敬(Gyeong) theories in order
to solve a problem of a person. Second, the process of solving a problem, based on the 敬(Gyeong) theory, shall be
actually applied to a case of consultation in order to explore its possibility through trial and error as a consultation
theory with academic system. With such efforts, the 敬(Gyeong) theory can be improved and developed into an
established theory of consultation.
