The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of search for self through Group Art
Therapy on decrease of adolescents' depression and anxiety.
The subjects for the study are male students, 13 to 14 years old, with depression and
anxiety.
The experiment was conducted with total 10 sessions of group art therapy, each with 60
to 90 minute work every week during February 2005 through April 2005.
The measurement tools for Group Art Therapy are Depression scale, Anxiety scale, K-HTP.
The results are as follows.
First, after depression test, student E, J, C all were normally depressed(18,16,17) in the
pre test but were not in depression(6,8,7) in the post test, showing that it could have an
effect on decrease of patients' depression.
Second, after anxiety test, student E, J, C were above the average(50,56,50)in the pre test
but were below the average(30,35,32) in the post test, showing that it could have an effect
on decrease of patients' anxiety.
Third, after K-HTP, student E, J, C got the result that tree, house and hand writing
were characterized as decrease of depression and the result that shading reflecting anxiety
and omitting foot disappeared, shown as decrease of anxiety. Thus, it could have an
positive effect on decrease of depression and anxiety.
Fourth, in the view of members' changes in the process, it was shown that members
lost control of emotional needs due to depression and anxiety in an early stage, and that
they was able to express their anger, trying to control their emotion in the middle, that
with decreased depression and anxiety, they could have positive self-esteem and their own
volition, finding ways to adapt themselves to circumstances at the last stage.
