The purpose of this study is to investigate the findings dealing with therapeutic factors in
group counseling/therapy and to present the directions of future study in group art therapy.
Through reviewing literature on therapeutic factors in group counseling and therapy, except
inpatient groups, one of the striking observations is the three main streams of general research
tendencies. The most potential therapeutic factors for any particular group vary as a function of
the group being studied, the stages of group development being sampled, or the characteristics
of group member. Even though the importance of therapeutic factors is varying with the level
of group function, interpersonal learning, self-understanding(insight), catharsis, and cohesion are highly emphasized in outpatient groups and self-growth groups. These factors are common
factors in group counseling and therapy. A literature on stages of group development supports
Yalom's hypothesis that therapeutic factor is differently valued as group development, but shows the inconsistent results. Recently, there is a growing tendancy that the perception on particular therapeutic factor is a function of different participants within group.
Based on above observations of therapeutic factors, Future directions for group art therapy are
discussed.
