This study aims to examine the effects of family art therapy on family communication and health of family relationship. This family art therapy consisted of three stages, each stage with three parts, thus having a total of twelve parts. Each part was a 2-hour session. A follow-up meeting was done six months afterwards to evaluate if the therapy had persistent effects. This study targeted a family that is in conflict because of communication problems. We called this family, “circle family.” To examine if circle family is suitable for this study, each family member filled out a questionnaire by Kim Young Ae, based on Satir model. To measure the change in communication and health of family relationship, Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) and Healthy Family Relationship Scale (HFRS) by Song Jung Ah were developed.
The following conclusions can be drawn from the results of this study.
First, the communication for the family improved through the family art therapy. During the family
art therapy, the family learned to express their thoughts and feelings honestly and to listen carefully to others through giving feedback of the drawings and exercises in opinion expression.
Second, the family relationship became healthier by family members using art to interact, thereby growing closer, and changing roles.
In conclusion, the Family art therapy had a positive effect in communication and the Health of
family relationship.
