T he purpose of this stu dy was to ex amine the effect of Melodic
Int on at ion T h er apy (MIT ) upon th e speech r ehabilit ation of Non - Flu ent
Aph asics . F or purpose of this study , it was ex amin ed if the application of
MIT would ch ang e th e language Mean of Length utt er an ce, the Number of
T otal Ut t er ance, th e Number of Syllables per minute, Namin g , Repet it ion , and
Verbal Int elligibility of the subject s . F our t een subject s , who had been
diagnosed as Non - Fluent Apha sic by the r esult s of K-WAB t est (the
ev aluat ion scale for the t est of aphasia ), par t icipated in this study . Sev en
subject s wer e inclu ded in the tr eatment group where MIT was administ r at ed
and the other s ev en subject s were in clu ded in th e cont rol group . As pr e- test ,
all th e subject s wer e t est ed u sing K-WAB t est and ev aluation scale made
by th e r es ear cher of the study . After pr e- t est , the MIT was administ rated to
th e tr eatment group 5 to 6 t imes ev ery week , an d a tot al of 26 t o 30
ses sion s wer e administ r ated dur in g 6.4 week s with for ty minut es for each
ses sion while the MIT wa s not administ r ated t o the control group. T h e MIT
in this study con sist ed of th e it ems ex cluding th e learnin g efficacy an d the
post - t est were giv en to both the groups in th e same way as pr e- test and
th e data wer e an aly zed u sin g t - test .
T he r esult s of this stu dy sh owed significant differ ence b etween the
tr eatment group and the cont rol group in Mean Len gth of Ut t er ance (p< .01),
th e Number of T otal Utt er an ce (p< .001), th e Number of Syllables per
minut e (p< .001), Naming (p< .01), Repet it ion (p< .01), Verb al Intelligibility (p< .001).
T he pr es ent result s sug gest that the MIT can be the efficient ther apeut ic
interv ent ion for the lan gu age rehabilitation of the Non - F lu ent Aph asics wh o
hav e lot s of difficult ies in ex pr es siv e speech .
T her efor e, as the ther apeutic int erv ention , the MIT can help the
Non - Fluent aphasics adapt t o social life throu gh the improving speech skill for
communication , and them contr ibut e to the improving the quality of their life.
