The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of music therapy based on rhythmic activities on the motor response and emotions in patients with Parkinson\'s Disease. Eighteen patients aged 50-70, who were all outpatients being treated in the department of neurology of the general hospital located in Songpa-ku, Seoul, participated in this study. They were classified in two groups. Ten subjects were included in the experimental group, treated with 20 sessions(mean) of music therapy for 11 weeks from Mar. 5th to May 16th, and 8 subjects were included in the control group without any treatment.
The instruments of the evaluation were UPDRS for Activities of Daily Living and Motor Skills, BDI for Depression, and PDQL for Quality of Life. The pretest and posttest were conducted, and the data between the experimental group and control group were analyzed statistically by Mann Whitney U test, SPSS/PC+ version 10.0.
The results of this study showed significant improvement in Activities of Daily Living(p< .05) and Motor Skills(p< .05) of UPDRS, and significant reduction in Depression of BDI(p< .005). The scores of PDQL for Quality of Life. Showed considerable improvement to Systemic (p= .008) and Social functioning (p= .005). There was no significant difference In Parkinism and Emotional functioning.
