The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of music activities using visual materials, on visual perception in the elderly. Tweny elderly women without visual deficits aged 75-90, who all live the same care center located in G-si, Gyeonggi-do, participated in this study, being classified in two groups. Ten subjects were included in an experimental group treated with 15 sessions of music therapy for six weeks from Oct. 2 to Nov. 9, and ten subjects were included in the control group without any treatment. The materials of the evaluation for the visual perception function used Motor-Free Visual Perception Test-Vertical Format (MVPT-V). This test constituted five constituent elements, namely the foreground and background, spatial relation, visual memory, visual completion and visual discrimination. The pretest and posttest were conducted, and the data between the experimental group and control group were analyzed statistically by t-test(SPSS/PC+ version 10.0). The results of this study showed significant improvement of score in the total MVPT-V, expecially in visual memory and visual discrimination(p<.05). The foreground and background, spatial relation, and visual completion functioning showed no significant improvement although their mean scores showed some improvement. In conclusion, the results suggested that music activities using visual materials might be useful for aiding visual perception in the elderly.
