The purpose of this single case study is to examine how mandala art therapy can influence a middle
aged woman's self-esteem and stress coping styles. For this study, a housewife in her 30s participated in
the mandala art therapy program consisting of 17 sessions from March 9, 2009 to July, 20, 2009 once every
week. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(RSES), K-HTP, PITR, Ways of Coping Questionnaire(Folkman & Lazarus)
were used as Pre-test and post-test for her. Also, her free mandala and pattern mandala were analyzed by
the researchers of this study. The result of this study is summarized as follows: First, after finishing the
mandala art therapy showed brings about the improvement on the self-esteem of the participant of the
syudy. Second, it brings about the positive change of stress coping stiyle in K-HTP and PITR. Third, there
was a significant difference in the Ways of Cogeping Questionnaire's several sub-scales(problem-solving,
seeking help, positive thinking, avoiding problem, and emotional relaxation). Fourth, after examining the
each level's change in the mandala art therapy, the participant of this study showed a positive cognitive
change about her family relationship and herself. Therefore, this study suggests that mandala art therapy
changes middle aged women's self esteem and the ways of stress coping.
