This study aims to investigate the relationship between stress, depression and social support in the Republic of Korea(ROK) army to see whether social support can be used to reduce stress and depression in soldiers. For this purpose, a total of 510 soldiers assigned to units stationed in areas north and south of the Han River on the South Korean peninsula were surveyed to investigate the relationship between social support and depression and the factors causing them stress. The results were then analysed through structural equation modelling(SEM). These showed that stress directly affected the subjects’ depression, while the social support they were given was found to indirectly reduce it. Based on these findings, it is proposed that social support systems should be more actively implemented as part of the social welfare services and counseling offered to soldiers.
