The purpose of this study was to analyse symbolic meanings of space configured during sandplay
therapy. From narrative hermeneutics point of view, researchers study the case of sandplay therapy
for an 8 year-old Indonesian girl who has lived in Korea for two years. Imaginative stories created
by the girl were matched with Whale-Jonah complex type of fairy tales which were analysed and
interpreted based on analytic-psychological perspective.
The followings were identified as the result of this study: The story the girl configurated were
‘sleeping in the house of mother and grandmother’, ‘going into the world of mother and
grandmother’, ‘being a girl who are keeping psychological balance’, and ‘meeting others’. The
symbolic meanings of space configured by the girl are ‘appearance of the maternal space’,
‘centripetal force of the maternal space’, ‘centrifugal force of the maternal space’, and ‘separating
from maternal space and centripetal force of the paternal space’. Finally, the implications of the
results of analytic-psychological therapy and research limitation were discussed.
