The picturebook is one of the major children's literature and has a characterful narrative is told
from words and pictures. This study examined the time in John Burningham's picturebooks(『Aldo』,
『Mr Gumpy's Motor Car』,『The Shopping Basket』,『John Patrick Noman McHennessy』,
『Grandpa』, 『Time to get out of the bath, Shirley』,『Come away from the water, Shirley』,
『Hey, Get off Our Train』,『Cloudland』), focused on order, duration, and frequency through the
theory of narrative discourse by Gerard Genette. The results were as follows: First, the time in
Burningham's picturebooks could reveal the complementary, extent, and sylleptic relationships between
words and pictures. Second, the time in Burningham's picturebooks made the unique rhythm through
changing Order, Duration and Frequency of time. Third, the time in Burningham's picturebooks
drew readers attention by expending gaps that readers should fill and emphasis of fantasy. In
conclusion, the time in picturebooks is important way to represent the narrative in picturebooks and
examining time in picturebooks could be enjoyable play for young children. Therefore, it requires
that teachers and parents give a chance to children can read the picturebooks show various kinds of
the time.
