The advent of the internet, with sophisticated algorithmic search engines, has made accessing information as easy as lifting a finger. Nowadays most people are relying on external tools or digital devices to store information instead of memorizing in their brains. It is called ‘memory outsourcing’. This study attempts to analyze the meaning and implications of ‘memory outsourcing’ in a comprehensive way. To do this, firstly, I examine the different characteristics of human memory and database or external artifacts, and explore related theories about human cognition mainly with ‘extended cognition’ and ‘distributed cognition’. In addition, this study discusses its implications on the educational context focusing on three aspects such as ‘subjective problem-finding’, ‘comprehension and transformation of the structure’ and ‘enjoyment of process experience’. This study intends to explore the blessings provided by the outsourcing of memory, and at the same time, identify what is still left for us, that is, the cognitive function inherent in human beings which is difficult to outsource.
